At the beginning of the year, I would never have imagined my final project to be digital fashion. I think that was the most surprising development for me. I would say the start of my trajectory changing was my writing about the metaverse as part of a fashion environment post, but after which I actually began to get pretty interested in it.
I had an existing interest in 3D work stemming from my interest in graphic design, but I saw creative opportunities while researching in the metaverse and began working on my 3D work. This led to the 3D photoshoot which I particularly enjoyed. It got me started on using Blender, which was very helpful for my final and later projects. In terms of skill and understanding, I’m interested in further building my skillset within the digital fashion space, as I believe it would further entangle with digital marketing as it assimilates with the fashion industry in the future.
This was very evident around the second term, and then I figured I was too focused on the digital future. Most of my projects then went on to building on existing skills as a marketer, and I transitioned into more Gen Z-focused branding. In the third term, I realised my video-making and filming skills were severely lacking considering social media’s move into video-type content. I created three different videos then, first using a computer, then transitioning to just a phone as I figured a social media manager wouldn’t use all their time to edit one Tiktok/Reel.
In the last term, I realised that I needed to step up my portfolio work by demonstrating some sort of analytical skill. I started creating fake brands and justifying its concept, then reflecting on how it could be executed in real life.
Overall, it’s interesting to see the entirety of my output as a fashion business student in one year. I’m pretty proud of how I expanded my aesthetic range by pushing myself out of my comfort zone and some projects, like the SIMS clothing one, was very unexpected for me. Seeing how much I’ve grown in one year, I’m excited to see what I can do and how I’ll continue to grow as I move on in life.
