The topic at hand today is the question: what do I want to be? So far, I’ve studied fashion marketing, and I’ve discovered through internships and assignments that I really do love working with social media. Taking into account my current interests, I conducted my research on job websites like Indeed, Jobstreet, Glassdoor, and Business of Fashion. A particular occupation area that stood out to me was Digital Marketing.
The key thing I uncovered from all this research is that working with social media is very much an option. A lot of companies work across digital platforms and need people to manage them. Digital Marketing leverages digital tools in marketing and is a necessary endeavor for companies to stay relevant (1). A lot of digital marketing work still involves social media, but responsibilities are also extended towards other digital platforms.
According to a recruitment ad put out by Cara Cara, the job scope of a digital marketing manager includes liaising with digital marketing agencies and clients, managing brand image through partners, and recruiting new on-brand partners (key opinion leaders).
I noticed a trend in the job ads put out for digital marketing related roles, with a common requirement across many being:
-
Fluency in English, both spoken and written
-
Digital marketing analytics proficiency (also includes Shopify Analytics, GoogleAds, Google Analytics)
-
Experience with SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is either required or highly valued
-
Familiarity with Adobe Suite
-
Familiarity with social media platforms
As of now, I can't say for sure if there are specific careers I aspire towards, but I do at least know what my area of interest is. I'm incredibly fascinated by our changing digital landscape, so combining that aspect of my interest with fashion and marketing makes digital marketing incredibly appealing. The list of common requirements I observed undoubtedly seems incredibly daunting but also serves somewhat as a starting point on what I can work towards in the meantime.
